Hong Kong, day 1

Rach and I somehow made it to the airport with time to spare, managing to fit last minute work, packing, a giant burger at Late Night, and driving all in two hours.

Everything went unnervingly smoothly, right from Wellington airport check in to arriving at my hostel, with a complete lack of confusion. I landed at dawn in Hong Kong with a few hours of sleep, and grabbed a bus straight in to the hostel.

Hong Kong day 1

It’s a strange thing going from lush green hills to densely packed and run down Mong Kok in such a short trip.

Hong Kong day 1

Check in wasn’t for another 4 hours, so I left my stuff and wandered about armed with iPhone maps. GPS is the best thing ever! They have these great parks fitted out with brightly coloured gym equipment for the elderly to work out on. It’s pretty awesome.

Everything was pretty empty in Mong Kok at 8am, lots of quiet and not a lot else.

Headed through the morning markets in Mong Kok. They really like their meat here. The markets take over the streets and just go on forever.

This guy looked pretty terrifying. It’s blurry because I was running away.

Hong Kong day 1

I got as far as Kowloon park before heading back. There are far, far more foreigners down this end, until then I’d seen no more than half a dozen. It’s a good sized chunk of green, and a lot calmer than anywhere else.

Walking back to the hostel at midday, Mong Kok had become crazy busy.

All signed in, Kenneth and I managed to get in touch. We headed down to the waterfront and grabbed some sushi from the area he works in near there.

A long stretch of the waterfront has been turned in to a Hong Kong actors walk of fame, with dozens of actors like Jackie Chan getting their star in the ground. It seemed pretty strange, but I did love the people posing with the statue of Bruce Lee – far more than I should have. I posed too to be fair, but we had some camera issues. Kenneth strongly refused.

A drink later, we met up with Ada and Helen to head over to Central for cocktails and (eventually) dinner. And we rode on the up hill escalator! But I was so excited I forgot to take a photo.

After arriving only to find it shut, we came back after a few drinks elsewhere to get the strawberry daiquiri’s that were the reason for heading over. Pretty great, and the coat of powdered chocolate on the outside of the glass was awesome, as demonstrated to a terrifying degree.

Everything in Soho is heavily foreign themed, so we ended up at a Greek restaurant. Far later than we should have, thanks to the daiquiri’s. And it was RAINING. The 50mm took a light knock while off the camera and just fell in half, lucky they’re cheap to replace.

We all caught a taxi back at around 1am, a good effort after so little sleep and so much walking. I got in to the foyer of my building, but the lift wasn’t working, and there was no way to get up the stairs. I was stranded with no way inside! Panic set in, and the drinks weren’t helping – I thought I’d have to spend my first night out on the streets in the rain. Then some other tourists turned up and led me around the block to the opposite side of the building where the lifts were working – saved! I’ve never been so happy in my life.

And that was my first day!
